10 Video Games Sequels That Were EXACTLY The Same
4. God Of War III
The first God of War game was a clever subversion of Greek mythology, depicting the protagonist Kratos and the Olympian gods as vengeful, violent entities who are ultimately unsatisfied by the conquest they claimed to want. The second God of War game doubled down on this theme by showing that the emptiness left in Kratos by his ascension to godhood has caused him to incite needless bloodshed out of boredom and grief.
This makes him a threat to Zeus, who tricks Kratos into surrendering his godly powers and promptly throws the upstart deity into the underworld. Driven by sheer hatred and vengeance, Kratos drags himself out of the land of the dead, regains his divine strength, and concocts a plan to use ancient mythological figures to kill Zeus.
It ends on a cliffhanger which leads into God of War III, which begins with Kratos being stripped of the powers he had only just reacquired and being tossed into the underworld. At which point, the cycle repeats. The only real difference between the two games is that Kratos is out to kill all the gods the second time around and decides to use Pandora's box to do so instead of the imprisoned Titans.
