10 Video Games So Bad They Apologised

7. Mass Effect 3 (Kai Leng)

Mass Effect 3 has faced several controversies since it was unleashed in March 2012, with the addition of Kai Leng being among the most salient.

Not only is he an Asian character voiced by a white actor (otherwise industry legend Troy Baker), but he’s frequently considered one of the worst additions to the series’ ever-growing cast of provocative personalities.

As the Illusive Man’s top henchman, Leng’s introduced far too late into the saga, has little depth, and is simultaneously offered too much and too little significance. He harms more substantial characters (Miranda and Thane) without earning such a valuable place in the plot and is then given too much focus by having Shepard hunt him down and finish him off instead of prioritizing more important things.

Clearly, Baker shared in audiences’ chagrin, as he showed remorse and dejection regarding how the character panned out. As he told Nolan North on their Retro Replay YouTube show, his response upon seeing Kai Leng was: “Oh, I don’t have to do this. . . . It was not good, dude.” He also pretends to vomit while saying that it was like having “soap in the mouth."

Sure, it’s an implicit apology, but it counts.
