10 Video Games So Good They Ruined Genres
5. Rocket League
A slightly controversial opinion perhaps, but why the hell would you want to play actual football - or hell, actual sports - games when you can play car football instead?
Rocket League is the football game for people who don't like football games, or perhaps find FIFA too intimidating or too...football-y.
Melding rocket-powered vehicles with a simple yet effective sci-fi aesthetic, deceptively challenging physics-based mechanics and the fist-pumping emotion of the Beautiful Game, Rocket League is a rare game that's practically perfect, and still outrageously popular four years on.
FIFA and other like-minded sports titles may crank out new editions every year for your hard-earned dosh, but Rocket League launched for a budget price, and in addition to releasing tons of free updates to players - including brilliant ice hockey and basketball modes - developer Psyonix has deemed a cash-grab sequel "not likely."
There have of course been literally dozens of games attempting to cash-in on Rocket League's charm and success, but almost without exception, their initially enthusiastic player-base dwindles after the early excitement dies down.
Rocket League, on the other hand, now has over 50 million players, and is sure to endure with gamers for as long as nudging a giant football around with a motorised car sounds like something fun to do.
