2. No Man's Sky (2016)- Everything Hello Games Said
First revealed at the 2013 VGX Awards, No Man’s Sky was touted as an unimaginably large space exploration game. Audiences quickly gravitated towards developers Hello Games’s vision, consequently making this game one of the most anticipated releases at the time.
A large reason for excitement surrounding this game was that it was pitched as infinite exploration within an infinite galaxy that would be made up of over 18 quadrillion procedurally generated planets. In short, No Man’s Sky was supposed to be a galactic-sized sandbox that would allow players to fully immerse themselves in the role of explorer.
However, it didn’t take long for it to become clear that No Man’s Sky wasn’t the feature-rich revolution in exploration games that audiences were led to believe. For starters, footage from a leaked copy of the game revealed that reaching the centre of the galaxy wasn't the epic quest that it was supposed to be.
Tales of encountering other players in the wild likewise proved to be nothing more than a complete fabrication on behalf of the studio to drive up hype.
Despite its catastrophic start, Hello Games eventually realised their vision following a series of massive updates. Now many years later, No Man's Sky is a phenomenal game.
