Right, look. I am well aware that at this point it's pretty much an established meme that Spec Ops: The Line appears on loads of lists on this website. And, yes, that is precisely why I included it.

Nah, not really, that's just a happy coincidence. Spec Ops: The Line is in fact directly inspired by the 1899 novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Which, in fact, was also the inspiration for Far Cry 2 and Victoria...but weirdly enough not the actual video game called Heart of Darkness, which annoys me far more than it should.

Don't let the word 'novella' above fool you, by the way, Heart of Darkness is a dense read. Worth your time, but it will also consume it. It's also potentially one of the most debated novels of all time. Many view it as a criticism of the brutality at the heart of British colonialism, whilst others - including acclaimed author and scholar Chinua Achebe - consider it a racist and dehumanising portrayal of Africans.
