10 Video Games That Are Flawed Masterpieces
4. Resident Evil 5 (2009)
In what we can only assume was an effort to avoid any comparisons to its acclaimed predecessor, Resident Evil 5 dropped in 2009 and flipped the series on its head. Even though its release only came four years after RE4, RE5 feels like a title from an entirely different series, swapping out the gothic setting of a European village in favour of action-packed West Africa.
Glossing cinematics, quick-time sequences, a new control scheme and an all-new emphasis on cooperative play between playable characters Chris and Sheva also ensured this was Resident Evil's first foray away from its survival horror roots.
But, whilst the control scheme has some issues and the gameplay mechanics have some irregularities (the main one being when players are allowed to take cover) this emphasis on blockbuster action over survival horror doesn't make RE5 a bad game. Far from it, in fact.
For one, the leap in graphics is staggering, and the pace at which players are thrown from mission to mission makes this a breathless experience, arguably one that offers more replayability value than previous games. There's also great variety in boss battles, the return of Jill Valentine and Wesker's outlandishly over-the-top portrayal to marvel at.
If nothing else, the fact it remains the highest-selling Resident Evil title to date must mean it's the best in the series, right?
