10 Video Games That Changed EVERYTHING When They Launched

8. Resident Evil 4 (2005)

Resident Evil 4
Capcom

The sixth major instalment in Capcom's flagship franchise, Resident Evil 4 was released back in 2005 and sees players take control of special agent Leon Kennedy and his travels across Eastern Europe in the quest to save the US president's daughter.

The setting, visuals and slick new mechanics were all great additions, and the new types of infected local villagers and hordes of zombie-like creatures helped makes Resident Evil 4 arguably the scariest survival horror game ever released.

One of the best features that helped bring out this survival horror feel specifically was the revolutionary new shooting system. After earlier versions of the game that were much more like the slow-paced previous games in the franchise were scrapped, developer Shinji Mikami decided to reinvent the camera and shooting so they felt more action-packed, dynamic and faster than before. This was done by placing the camera behind the player and allowing them to have a greater field of vision.

This new formula not only proved groundbreaking in how the series played out going forward, but proved hugely influential in making the 'over the shoulder' angles all the rage for third person games going forward.
