2020's Battletoads reboot is a fitting successor to the retro classic, for better and worse.

Much like the original game, the reboot flirts with many different gaming genres throughout its campaign, though the first half is more explicitly focused on being a 2.5D beat 'em up with occasional vehicular levels in the vein of its predecessor.

Yet the second half of the game evolves - or devolves, depending on your opinion - into a more-or-less random assemblage of mini-games, cycling primarily between platformer and space shooter before finally circling back to more typical combat at the very end.

For those who enjoyed the beat 'em up focus of the first half, the switch was perhaps a tad disappointing, yet the mini-games were nothing if not lovingly crafted homages to classic retro gaming.

True to its iconic, infuriating forebear, Battletoads 2020 was chaos manifest in video game form.
