10 Video Games That Don’t Deserve Their Masterpiece Status

9. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

When Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was confirmed to be taking the series back into an ambitious and dangerous setting, I was overjoyed. The idea of a refined Snake Eater for new generation of hardware sounded like the type of game I - and many fans - had been dreaming of since first beating MGS3 all those years ago.

What came in its place, however, was far from that. The Phantom Pain plays without any of the panache or nuance that other MGS games have, and at times it ended up feeling like an Assassin's Creed game under a new guise. The action was far too forgiving; I never felt punished for not doing things Big Boss' way and there was always an easy way out. Boss' gadgets literally offer a solution to nearly every issue, making him seem almost worthless without his gear.

The Phantom Pain also features what must be the least intelligent enemy AI of the series so far; you can too easily manipulate their behaviour to pick them off one by one. Drawing guards to a fortifiable slaughter-house is a reliable strategy for almost every mission, taking away virtually all of the tactical challenge of earlier games in the series.

Oh, and don't even mention that painfully ridiculous opening stage at the hospital. What a waste of forty-five minutes that was! While parts of this game were wonderful, a masterpiece, it is certainly not.
