10 Video Games That Exploited Your Nostalgia

8. Dragon Quest Tact

The Last Of Us Part 1
Square Enix

Square-Enix are no stranger to baying for the wallet of their audience (we see you, Final Fantasy: All the Bravest) but it’s always sad to see a once great and oftentimes timid series be used in such a huge, boneheadedly capitalist way. Dragon Quest Tact is by no means the first but it is one of the latest in the genre of money-hungry gacha games.

The most disheartening thing about Dragon Quest Tact is that there’s almost something resembling a game here but it’s buried under constant requests for your latest pay check. If you fail a battle, fear not as you can pay to revive your team and continue. Want to grind for experience even faster? The best auto-battling selection is behind a paywall.

Whilst the game is all about collecting your favourite Dragon Quest characters, and that is of course the main pull of the game, the absolute best of the best are pay only. No matter how many times you spin the gacha wheel, you’ll never get your favourite warriors unless you’re willing to part with cash.

Overall, Dragon Quest Tact is a pretty ironic name considering it shows Square-Enix’s lack of prudence; using the power of nostalgia to squeeze as much cash they can out of devoted fans.
