Indie games often provide us with more innovative experiences that deliver interesting, unique premises and mechanics that larger developers or publishers would not take a risk in releasing. But when many of us first laid eyes on Lucas Pope's 'Papers, Please', we were not overly enthused at the prospect of playing as an immigration inspector for the fictional communist state of Arstotzka.

Well, what a pleasant surprise I received when I discovered a thought provoking, beautifully executed puzzle game that still reigns supreme as one of the most interesting indie titles ever made.

Tasked with approving entry to the state, you must weed out the spies, smugglers and terrorists using only the documents they provide. Alongside the inspect, search and fingerprint systems you have access to, it can be a thrilling process of determining who can be granted access and who must be detained.

You are also presented with a decision to side with a mysterious organisation called EZIC who aim to overthrow the government, or remain true to the state. Papers, Please features twenty possible endings based on the choices you make throughout the game and some additional unlockable modes such as an endless-play version.
