5. Resident Evil 4
You could argue that Resident Evil 4 "isn't really a horror game". To which, you may be right... but then, it wasn't trying to be. Well, not in the conventional sense
It turned survival horror into action horror. It still had its jumpy moments, but it was something new and fresh in the wake of criticism of the staleness of the formula prior.
Capcom took a gamble with RE4, even in its early stages (which went on to become Devil May Cry).
And what have we had in droves since 2005?
That's right, over-the-shoulder action games, usually in the horror mold. Dead Space, The Evil Within, even the next two Resident Evil games tried to ape the same formula.
Even I've said before about how stale RE4 is in comparison to today's standards, but the influence on a new type of fast-paced horror is nothing to be sniffed at.
So much so that Capcom went back and remade Resident Evil's 2 & 3 in the same style should be a testament to its impact on the genre.
And then Resident Evil 7 changed the game again...
