Call of Duty: Modern Warfare confounded players' expectations when it killed one of its primary player characters, Sgt. Paul Jackson, totally out of nowhere in a nuclear explosion half-way through the game. After this, the perspective shifted to John "Soap" MacTavish for the majority of the game's remainder.

But Modern Warfare 2 built on this shock value by offing a major fan favourite player character unexpectedly - Sgt. Gary "Roach" Sanderson.

At the end of the level "Loose Ends", both Roach and Ghost are betrayed by General Shepherd, who shoots them dead and consequently burns their bodies, in one of the most jaw-dropping sequences from any Call of Duty game to date.

There are still three levels to go at this point, with the player being given Soap to once again control for the rest of the game, culminating in him gloriously avenging Roach and Soap's deaths by flinging a knife into Shepherd's eye.
