2. BioShock - How Far Would You Go To Appease A Friend?
A masterclass of manners and manipulation, BioShock's protagonist Jack finds himself at the mercy of a psychological puppet master in the underwater utopia of Rapture. As revealed through the story, Jack follows the radio communications of Frank Fontaine, as he 'kindly' asks Jack to commit certain acts as he navigates his way through the maddened city. He begins every request with the mannerly phrase: "would you kindly..." Originally appearing as a wise, friendly, welcoming guide, the sinister nature of Frank's requests are soon uncovered, as Jack is revealed to have been genetically modified at birth to follow certain commands upon the hypnotic trigger: "would you kindly."
Psychological Effect As the scientific modification to Jack's person is not revealed until the end, it raises an interesting prospect throughout the game, as a friendly, helpful companion coerces you, into committing certain acts of murder and destruction upon a simple request. Frank's blasé, polite approach to immorality leaves the player with the revelation that they have been carefully manipulated into helping the primary antagonist. This illustrates the power of appearances, as someone seemingly harmless and aligned with the player ultimately masquerades as the villain.
