4. Altered Beast
The second tale of revenge and rescue on this list, but weirdly, not yours. Well, it's your mission as the player to rescue them, obviously, but the hero himself? He's just the lucky punter that Zeus resurrected to rescue his daughter Athena.
But rather than just be any other decomposing corpse with a bit of mobility granted to them, you're a special one. This unnamed hero can transform, or alter, himself into a variety of monsters, or beast, under certain requirements.
Beasts plural, that is.
Collecting three spirit balls will allow the hero to turn into a host of were-things, depending on the level: a wolf, tiger, dragon and even... a bear! Alright, the last one isn't as cool as a dragon that shoots lightning, but it's nice to have variety.
Each transformation grants you an ability, such as the aforementioned lightning or throwing fireballs at the legions of bad undead that Neff directs at you. Of course, the trick is to keep the powers running until you face off against Neff himself, which is no easy feat.
Still, watching that transformation video each time is always a blast.
