In critically acclaimed Mass Effect series, players spend much of their time as Commander Shepherd fighting back against the impending Reaper invasion whenever they're not romancing crewmates.

Not much is divulged about what exactly the Reapers are during the first two games other than their arrival would spell the end of the entire universe, with the extinction of an ancient alien race known as the Protheans underscoring how dangerous the Reapers were. However, there was just as little revealed about what this mysterious civilisation was.

It wasn't until Mass Effect 3 until players finally learned more about this precursor race when a skirmish for an artefact would lead the Normandy crew to discovering Javik, the last remaining Prothean. However, this was only possible if fans picked up the From Ashes DLC.

Alongside adding a new squad mate to the game, From Ashes was essential in filling in the gaps in lore surrounding this race and the crucial role they played within the Mass Effect universe.

Even more irritating was this DLC was released alongside the game's launch, a move that sparked allegations that the content was included on the disc but locked behind a paywall to wring extra funds from fans.
