3. Wait, That's The Ending? - Mass Effect 3

Saying the Mass Effect trilogy is great doesn't do it justice. The narrative is staggeringly multi-layered. The characters' relationships are methodically thorough. The way your choices link and affect each succeeding instalment is astounding.

Because so much thought was put in every detail, everyone safely assumed BioWare would put the most care into the climax.

Instead, Mass Effect 3 ended with the player given three choices, which would result in the same ending with different light filters. Because Mass Effect always focused on the consequences of your actions, giving the player three identical endings regardless of your choices didn't just come across as lazy - it felt like trolling.

Due to the relentless outcry from the fanbase, BioWare rushed out an Extended Cut, which expanded on the underwhelming ending. Despite the company's best efforts to appease gamers, the damage was clearly done. Many fans felt so betrayed by this non-ending, they didn't bother checking out the follow-up, Mass Effect Andromeda.

Although the initial trilogy is still regarded as an utter triumph overall, it's impossible to disassociate Mass Effect with its shoddy climax.
