The Question: What is the purpose of the ring-like structures in the desert?

Shadow of the Colossus is a game that's massively ambiguous by design, preferring to leave players to marinate on the finer details of its mysterious yet beautifully intriguing world.

One such enigma that's boggled fans' minds for the better part of two decades is the unexplained presence of some ring-like structures half-buried in the desert where you battle the thirteenth Colossus, Phalanx.

There are four rings in the area, two in tact, two broken, and given that the rings look extremely similar to the rings that appear in the game's spiritual predecessor Ico, fans naturally think there could be some greater significance to them.

On the other hand, a compelling fan theory (embedded below) makes a case that the rings were installed in the ground to limit Phalanx's movements and ensure it couldn't fly away from the desert arena.

Whatever your own opinion, don't expect director Fumito Ueda to ever provide a sure-fire answer.
