The issue with popping into people's minds is that, on a practical level, very few are going to be able to process that you are a young boy with psychic powers - despite this being the entire premise of Psychonauts throughout.

And thus, while your psychic teachers openly let you into their minds to train your skills, many other people you encounter aren't as aware that you aren't a figment of their imagination.

Indeed, much of the time you'll find yourself sort of playing along with whatever they've decided you are - and, in the case of the deeply unstable conspiracy theorist Boyd, you'll actively lie about having various professions in order to blend in.

At the end of the day, you are doing this to try and help these people work out their issues, so it's not as though you're a monster for doing so - but it still can feel a little weird the first time you fake being a road worker in order to not get arrested in an imaginary world.
