10 Video Games That Make You Rethink Time And Space

3. The Witness

Portal game
Jonathan Blow

A double whammy for Blow on this list, but much like Braid, The Witness deserves both the praise and ire it gets.

Another first person adventure, The Witness has no immediate danger or sinister, evil plot to follow. What it does have, though, are over six hundreds of the same simple looking but increasingly harder puzzle variant.

I say simple, because they're all set on a grid-based system, and usually require you connecting one dot or line to another or end point.

Yet it's not just the solving of each puzzle that makes up The Witness' game play, but the finding of each area too. As you work your way through each grid, the eager and ambitious will take joy in seeking out the next grid to work on.

Outside of the immediate puzzling, there's a wealth of background activities that make this game a thinking man's delight. Inspirational audio recordings from historical figures, movie clips from prominent artists and more scattered about.

The Witness isn't just a straightforward puzzle game, but more an artistic vision with puzzles in it.
