10 Video Games That Never Bettered Their Opening Levels
3. No Man's Sky
Of the many, many things that No Man's Sky does wrong, at least it makes a pretty incredible first impression.
Crash-landing on a randomly-generated planet, you could spawn into anything from a radioactive wasteland to somewhere water-dominated with aggressive robotic enemies, to seeing herds of dinosaurs roaming around at all times. From here you'll have to scavenge materials, carefully scale cliff faces and creep through a number of underground cave systems - all in service of amassing the materials to power up your ship and get back into space.
That whole sequence, embodying that survivalist mentality and not knowing what's around the corner is fantastic... it's just a shame the launch day version of No Man's Sky didn't have a whole lot else to offer afterwards.
