10 Video Games That Open On MAJOR Plot Twists

5. Sam Caldwell Dies - Dead Space: Extraction

Mass Effect 2 Shepard
Visceral Games

Though it was no surprise that Dead Space: Extraction wouldn't feature series protagonist Isaac Clarke - this being a prequel and all - Visceral Games nevertheless found a way to deliver a sneaky bait-and-switch at the climax of the opening level.

When the rail-shooter begins, players assume the role of miner Sam Caldwell, who during a mission to extract the Red Marker from Aegis VII begins to hallucinate a Necromorph infestation.

The player shoots their way through the mine, but at the end of the level it's revealed that Sam was actually shooting his own teammates who were not in fact infected by the Marker.

Worse still, Sam is himself then gunned down by an incoming squad, including among them Detective Nathan McNeill. After Sam quickly dies, the perspective abruptly swaps to McNeill, who serves as the protagonist for the rest of the game. Intense.
