10 Video Games That Overstayed Their Welcome
1. The Last Of Us Part II (2020)
Set four years after the events of the first game, The Last Of Us: Part II sees an adult Ellie set out on a quest for revenge against those who brutally murdered her father-figure Joel in a shocking opening sequence.
Playing alongside Ellie’s gritty tale of vengeance is a plotline which reframes events from the perspective of Abby, Joel’s murderer. Painting her in a sympathetic light, the game uses its disturbing depictions of violence to weave a hard-hitting parable of the fruitless nature of revenge.
The Last Of Us: Part II is undoubtedly one of the greatest achievements of storytelling in video games. By the time both protagonists finally cross paths in the climax, players are put through the emotional wringer before witnessing the tense confrontation.
This conclusion would have been a fitting end to both Ellie and Abby’s stories, but the game had other ideas.
The game picks up one year later with a lengthy epilogue sequence where Ellie once again goes after Abby. Though hammering home its main themes and closing on a sombre note, the epilogue is ultimately an unnecessary re-treading of previous plot beats which didn't add anything you hadn't seen by this point.
