3. Dark Souls
Dark Souls and its subsequent sequels are some of the most influential titles of the past decade, with the 'soulsborne' combat being mimicked by so many games since the series' first instalment in 2011.
Perhaps more synonymous with the series than its combat is its immense difficulty, with Dark Souls' brutal enemy encounters and near impossible boss fights being enough to make an otherwise short campaign tens of hours long.
The quest to 'git gud' is frustrating in the best possible way. Conflict around every corner, a punishing save system and resurrecting enemies with every bonfire rest stacks the deck against the player and will piss you off immensely, but the euphoria of overcoming the game's plentiful adversaries is beyond relieving.
The glorious gameplay makes every challenge a welcome one, as bouts with the Asylum Demon, Bell Gargoyles or the iconic Ornstein and Smough are terrific moments in gaming as a whole, despite the punishing nature of the fights surely making the most seasoned gamer thoroughly pissed off.
Dark Souls wouldn't be the game it is without its difficulty, as it's undeniably a source of great frustration as well as wonder.
