10 Video Games That Punish You For Being Smart

5. Silent Kill 2 Kills You For Being Too Inquisitive

In horror games, the default ending is usually the bad one. Play the game through to completion without completing side activities or bothering to piece together the main story and you can usually guarantee that your character is in for a bad time.

Silent Hill 2, however, actually punishes curious players with one of the most downbeat and melancholic endings the game has to offer. Here, protagonist James Sunderland searches for and finds a way to revive his dead wife, with the implication being that if he succeeds, he'd only succeed in creating an unholy abomination.

The only reason James thinks this is a possibility, however, is because the player has searched every environment and poured over every collectible document the game has to offer. You need to find four items that only appear on New Game Plus in order to unlock this secret 'Rebirth' ending, and all that effort is for another climax that's just as dour as the rest.
