10 Video Games That Punish You For Dying

9. Community Morale Takes A Hit - State Of Decay

It's admittedly only inevitable that people are going to die in the midst of a zombie outbreak, but State of Decay takes a relatively unique approach to this by considering the impact someone's death would have on a tightly-knit community.

Dying in the survival horror game doesn't result in a Game Over, but it will cause the community morale to take a collective hit, and you'll notice a significantly more negative attitude among the remaining survivors.

So there you have it: when you're out there battling the undead, you've got the mental health of an entire settlement to think about.

Morale can be re-balanced by completing missions and bringing both survivors and supplies back home, but forcing players to think outside of the single character they're playing as is certainly a unique rub for the genre.

If you get yourself killed out there, you're going to make life worse for a whole lot of people. As such, every action carries a little extra emotional weight.
