10 Video Games That Punish You For Dying
4. Lose 10% Of Your Total EXP - Tibia
MMORPGs are a particularly fascinating genre where death penalties are concerned, and though most will offer nothing beyond a temporary de-buff or small durability reduction to all equipped items, some are certainly crueler than others.
Take the legendary 1990s MMO Tibia, where in its original iteration death from levels 1-23 would result in the player losing 10% of their total experience points and spent mana. Depending on the player's level, this could even result in them being "demoted" back down a level.
This proved especially frustrating given that it could easily affect players with a dropped Internet connection, causing them to return to find themselves robbed of hours of time through no real fault of their own.
Considering the steep levelling climb in classic Tibia, and the prohibitive expense of acquiring blessings that could prevent the experience loss, the cost of death is massive. For those who value their free time, it's perhaps a bit too harsh for its own good.
