10 Video Games That Punished You For Being A Thief

5. Getting Caught Stealing Dents Your Reputation - Baldur's Gate

The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening
Black Isle Studios

While the mere act of stealing itself won't cause players any major headaches in legendary RPG Baldur's Gate, getting caught stealing and turning the nearby NPCs hostile is a whole other matter.

Even if you can deal with the antsy NPCs - whether by fighting them, bribing them, or fleeing - your reputation will drop, which can affect how NPCs will deal with you and also the prices you'll pay for items in shops.

Given the game's already significant difficulty level, where every advantage you can get counts, that has the potential to be debilitating.

Let your reputation drop low enough and the authorities will attempt to engage and arrest you on sight at most every opportuniyt, which given the headache it creates is generally a pretty strong deterrent against players stealing.
