10 Video Games That Punished You For Saving

4. Alien Isolation

Alien Isolation
Sega

In Alien: Isolation, our heroine, Amanda Ripley, is constantly being hunted by psychopaths, androids, and a Xenomorph. Because you're going to die A LOT, Isolation is the kind of game you'd expect to have an auto-save feature.

But it doesn't. Since Isolation focuses on its eerie atmosphere, it wouldn't be particular scary if you could save whenever you wanted. To ensure every moment is dripping with tension, the emergency phones, which serve as save stations, are as spread out as far as possible. They are often separated by multiple slow-opening doors, which is the last thing you want when you have an enemy on your tail.

Even when you find these phones, you're not out of the woods yet. You see, games like Eternal Darkness and Resident Evil only let you save while there are no threats nearby. Alien Isolation doesn't give you this option. When you try to save, there could be a killer robot, a gun-toting bandit, or an acid-spitting extra-terrestrial right behind you.

But what's worse is it takes FOREVER to save. After picking up the phone, you have to wait ten seconds for the save point to be created. While you wait, you're forced to face a wall, meaning you're not allowed to look around to see if there's a Xenomorph beside you, ready to rip your face off.
