10 Video Games That Released At The WORST Possible Time
1. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
Last on our list is what I will refer to as Vampire, for the sake of brevity.
Ultimately, it had three major factors of competition, but they weren’t all in direct alignment.
Firstly, we have the Xbox exclusive Halo 2 releasing a week prior. This gobbled up a huge chunk of the casual market and as with the rest of the competition, will have done so leading into the Christmas time. Vampire’s biggest competitor, however, doesn’t come from a shared genre, but instead, a shared release date:
The highly anticipated and extremely delayed Half-Life 2.
The argument here isn’t, "well, they’re hardly comparable", it’s more, "which game would you be choosing come November 18th 2004?"
I can assure you, MANY chose Half-Life 2. Then, day later we have Metal Gear Solid 3 and a week later is the North American release of World of Warcraft.
These are legitimate juggernauts to fight, and it goes to show that regardless of how unique of a game you offer, a level of difference or edge over your competitor means nothing compared to the huge names of Metal Gear Solid, Halo and Half-Life.
