10 Video Games That Retconned EVERYTHING
3. Final Fantasy 14
In 2022, Final Fantasy 14 is widely considered to be one of the finest Massive Multiplayer Online games ever made.
Its characters are simply unforgettable, its social elements are expertly implemented and the main storyline is better than it has any right to be. It's a success in so many ways, and many may believe that this was always the case.
But it wasn't. Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn released in 2013 to masses of critical acclaim, yet this was three years after the first attempt at the game failed miserably.
Now long since abandoned, the game's 1.0 version hit digital storefronts in 2010 and was quickly panned by gamers everywhere. The game was lacking in content and so many of its essential components were broken, so Square Enix went back to the drawing board and announced they would relaunch the game when it was truly ready.
Narratively, A Realm Reborn retcons everything the original game included while also acknowledging its existence. 1.0 is merely used as a plot device to bring players to the game as we know it today.
It was a retcon that was more than justified, as Final Fantasy 14 continues to impress all these years later.
