Puzzles are difficult. Video game point-and-click puzzles? Even more so. There'll be many times where you are left unsure of what exactly you are supposed to try and do next, and thus are left to the old reliable solution of rubbing your items on everything that can be interacted with until you either find a solution or die of boredom.

Tales of Monkey Island sensed the existential anguish this could develop in some players, especially those who played the game early enough that they couldn't end their ire by simply looking up a guide online.

To try and minimise the amount of computer screens punched through in a fit of puzzle-based rage, the game did what many point-and-clicks would simply never: it offered you the goddamn solutions.

Or, rather, if Guybrush noticed that you'd stood around for a long time, he'd offer you a helpful hint in the right direction - with some hints being slightly more heavy handed than others.

While some puzzle purists likely thought this was sacrilege, it definitely served to make the genre a little more accessible to a wider audience. And, given just how good the Monkey Island series is, the idea of more people being able to play through all of it certainly isn't a bad one.

I like my comics like I like my coffee - in huge, unquestionably unhealthy doses.
