This entry may result in some hate as there will likely be a large number of gamers who hold fond memories of playing the unlockable multiplayer mode in Donkey Kong 64 with soon-to-be former friends. The mode was fun for the time and provided some good fun in short bursts with up to four players, however it was vastly different to the single-player experience in Donkey Kong’s first 3D outing.

With two modes on offer, Monkey Smash and Battle Arena, the mode served as little more than a nice distraction when you had friends over. However, with games like Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64 and Mario Party already on Nintendo’s 3D system there were better games that could be played with friends.

The original manual for Rare’s Platformer even jokingly made reference to the fact that the game featured a multiplayer mode that was likely thrown in at the last minute and was likely average at best. Self-deprecating jokes aside, the multiplayer mode provided a nice distraction but was ultimately lacking compared to other games on offer at the time.
