10 Video Games That Should've NEVER Got Sequels
8. Duke Nukem 3D
Sequel: Duke Nukem Forever
Many a gamer know the tale of the ill-fated Duke Nukem Forever. Developed over a whopping 15 years, a combination of game engine switches, company lay-offs, and inevitable lawsuits threatened DNF to live up to its namesake and forever remain as vaporware. Duke Nukem's legacy would have probably been much greater if it did.
Of course, the years of age were immediately apparent on Duke Nukem Forever's release. Not only were load-times painstakingly long, but they also didn't give way to anything substantial. Textures and graphics were rather muddy in this already dull shooter.
In truth, Duke Nukem's 1990s humour comes across as dated today. Even the edgiest of humourists cringe at the urination, defecation, and titillation jokes. Duke Nukem's return in the 21st Century was never going to be met with rapturous applause. And with old 2-D shooters like Doom and Wolfenstein successfully filling the nostalgia market, there was no hope for a Duke Nukem return.
While there were talks that a new Duke Nukem game was in the works in 2015, a Gearbox employee confirmed in 2017 that no one was interested in revitalising the series.
Sorry, King. Your reign is over.
