10 Video Games That Sold MILLIONS (Despite Being Terrible)

2. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy

Grand Theft Auto Definitive Edition
Rockstar

Next game on the (s)hit list is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition. Or, as it's also known "The Cyberpunk 2077 of 2021".

Much like 2020 saw CD Projekt's infamous RPG become the biggest piƱata in the games industry, November 2021 saw gaming outlets far and wide absolutely batter Take Two's disastrous revival of the PS2-era Grand Theft Autos.

And with good reason. Far from being the definitive editions promised in the title, the remasters made each game actively worse. Characters were given hideously ugly redesigns, iconic songs from the soundtracks were cut for licensing reasons and the game's remastered weather effects were legitimately worse than the 2004 originals. And that's not even mentioning the bizarre glitches or the genuinely insulting Switch port.

Yet despite all that, Take Two reported that the remasters "exceeded sales projections", with up to 10 million copies reportedly having been sold.

GTA games have always held a dim view on humanity, and if that many people wilfully parted money for this dumpster fire of a collection then you can see why. (Dollars to donuts there'll be a mission in GTA 6 where a corrupt executive gloats over fleecing the public with shoddy, effort-free remasters).
