4. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare
The military shooter to end all military shooters, and the one that proved - as Halo had the sci-fi side of things nailed down - that military blasters could work outside of Counter-Strike on PC. Yes you can point to the second Modern Warfare as the one that caused more controversy and at least attempted to get people talking about what they were placing the crosshair over in the airport-slaughtering No Russian mission, but it's the perk-based multiplayer, the now-standard left/right trigger setup and the overall 'feel' of movement in COD that's defined the entire genre ever since. 2014's Advanced Warfare and this year's Black Ops 3 seem to be leaning pretty heavily into sci-fi territory following the former's introduction of bio-mechanical suits that enhance your movement (thereby turning off those who just want more of the same every year), but still when you get behind even the newest instalment you can tell it's COD through and through. For all the flak the series gets these days as the go-to 'bro shooter' of choice (or whatever you want to call it) it's still incredibly well put together, has a gargantuan budget for the team to realise every crazy Michael Bay-style set-piece they can conjure up, and refine the gameplay to within a hair's breadth of any decision the fans may want year-in, year-out.
