10 Video Games That Totally Wasted Their Biggest Selling Point

8. Thinking You Were Solid Snake - Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty

Yes yes, the entire point of MGS 2 was established ideologies being challenged and broken, thereby in a total meta sense, knocking your expectations for a loop and giving you Raiden instead was closer to some sort of genius - but it didn't help the reception at the time.

Also, although it's a game we'll never see, can you honestly say a version of MGS 2 featuring Snake throughout - with more levels themed like the Tanker and cutscenes fleshing out a focussed campaign about his and Otacon's mech-thrashing efforts - wouldn't have gone down in gaming history all the same?

Sons of Liberty's story was breaking new ground (especially when it came to how much a director's vision is allowed to run wild), but the main thing we were all collectively blown away by were the game mechanics, which thankfully helped MGS 2 regain its footing in the end.

Snake would later be added in the re-released 'Substance' version, but in terms of whether you think Raiden 'worked' as intended or not, is a debate that divides rooms to this day.
