10 Video Games Too Scary To Finish

Eternal Darkness is an interesting game that went largely unnoticed on its release. Despite being planned for the Nintendo 64, it was eventually released on Gamecube. The story follows multiple characters in different time periods as their paths intertwine in a complex story about ancient gods and the Tome of Eternal Darkness, a book bound with flesh.

The stories play out in non-chronological order and see us going backwards and forwards through history as we slowly piece together the truth about the stories written in the Tome of Eternal Darkness. It's a clever game in how it utilises its storytelling and gameplay. It uses a sanity metre, a little bit like Amnesia. However, in Eternal Darkness, if your sanity gets low, you're going to experience some very unpleasant things.

See, the game manipulates the player to feel like they are descending into madness, just like the characters in the game. Examples include the game pretending to take control of the screen and delete all your save data, or it might just suddenly end the game and show a screen promoting a sequel game. It can randomly mute the audio or flash up a picture of a monster.

That is just a small example of the things we can expect to see with low sanity, but it was an ingenious mechanic that certainly kept players on their toes.
