9. Battle Borefest - PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
The Dream: Super Smash Bros. for the PlayStation? Haven't we wanted this ever since the original 1999 N64 game? Now we'll finally get to have Solid Snake taking on Crash Bandicoot, Nathan Drake, and Lara Croft in a grueling fatal four-way fight to the death, right? Right!? The Reality: Even ignoring the surprisingly complex battle system, Sony's answer to Smash Bros. flopped because it just didn't have the household names worthy of its namesake: where on Earth were Solid Snake, Lara Croft, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Cloud and other unmistakably crucial icons of the PlayStation? Instead of Snake, we get...Raiden (who we'll talk about more later), and the game features near-anonymous characters such as "Fat Princess" who we just couldn't give a hoot about. This could have been a fantastic retort to Super Smash Bros., but instead it's a misguided, poorly thought-out failure. If Sony couldn't put their cream of the crop in the game for some sort of licensing issue, then they shouldn't have made the game in the first place.
