10 Video Games With Utterly Pointless Multiplayer Modes You Ignored

2. Dead Space 2

EA have something of a reputation for putting out the same games every year with a bit of a face-lift and a new database. So when they come up with a brand new IP that turns out to actually be good everyone got pretty excited, especially when that new IP is a survival horror game; a genre that is bereft of talent. Dead Space was breath taking. It combined a haunting and atmospheric setting with a believable world to provide a title that was actually able to scare you. With striking graphics and a truly bleak plot the title was able to accomplish a level of sophistication usually reserved for movies. With the announcement that its sequel would contain a multiplayer mode many people were instantly sceptical. The first instalment had been all about telling a chilling, lonely story, something that wouldn€™t easily translate to an online arena. It turns out that the multiplayer component was a crude death match-like game-type that pitted the Necromorphs against a group of human characters. This competitive mode carried over none of what makes the single experience so fulfilling, the engrossing environments and the ability to be scared without a moment€™s notice are lost completely. Instead we have a mixture of Gears of War and Call of Duty, where the signature mechanic of the series, removing the limbs of your enemies, doesn€™t work properly. It all added up to a game mode that died fairly quickly and was dropped from Dead Space 3.
