10 Video Games We Still Can't Believe Got Cancelled
9. True Crime: Hong Kong
Before you jump down our collective throats - yes, we know about Sleeping Dogs and yes, it’s a superb game.
With that out of the way, the disbelief when it comes to this entry is aimed toward Activision cancelling True Crime: Hong Kong in the first place. According to the game’s executive producer, True Crime was “playable from start to finish and virtually complete in terms of content” when Activision canned the project in 2011.
Although not the massive commercial success that similar games like GTA were at the time, True Crime still sold reasonably well and had garnered a cult following. The second title, True Crime: New York City, was criminally underrated (pun intended) and left committed fans yearning for more.
If Activision didn’t believe there was enough demand, they wouldn’t have agreed to publish a third game in the first place. Therefore, it’s odd that so far into production, the game was tossed out due to quality issues. Had developers been allowed the time to work out any kinks, using the True Crime title would likely have helped ship more units than Sleeping Dogs eventually did.
That said, the nine of us who did pick up Sleeping Dogs are eternally grateful to Square Enix for putting this awesome game out.
