10 Video Games We Still Can't Believe Got Cancelled
4. Gotham By Gaslight
Before Rocksteady blew everyone’s minds with their fantastic Arkham series, Batman had made an appearance in a multitude of different video games; some better than others. These ranged from platformers, to third-person action titles, to side-scrolling brawlers, to driving games, and even the odd Lego tie-in.
One game that astonishingly never saw the light of day was Gotham by Gaslight. Taking its story from the 1989 graphic novel of the same name, Gotham by Gaslight would have seen the Caped Crusader featuring in a detective story set in a steampunk version of Gotham in 1889.
Early footage showed the title to be another third-person action game with a focus on stealth, a slow-motion mechanic and numerous, not necessarily period-appropriate, gadgets at Batman’s disposal. Whilst basic, this footage was aesthetically pleasing, suggesting that the finished product would have been a beautiful game.
Sadly for fans of the bat, Day 1 Studios and THQ failed to secure the relevant rights from Warner Bros to release the game and the project was eventually abandoned. Much like with other games that THQ cancelled during this period, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to speculate that the company’s financial problems would have had an impact on this.
