10 Video Games We Still Can't Believe Got Cancelled
3. Silent Hills
By now, most people know the infamous story behind the cancellation of Silent Hills, but that doesn’t make it any less painful.
Hideo Kojima and the previously mentioned Guillermo del Toro had been working on this ninth main-game instalment to the Silent Hill franchise, with Norman Reedus to be the face and voice of the protagonist. However, after a very public dispute with Konami, Kojima and a number of his staff left the company, with Konami cancelling the game in 2015.
The only remnants we have of Silent Hills is the stellar Playable Teaser (or PT) demo that was released for PlayStation 4 in 2014. The demo, in which you would repeatedly walk around a corridor in a creepy and subtly changing environment, had players sh*tting themselves world-over as they tried to avoid being stumbled upon by the house’s terrifying tenant, Lisa.
Konami even went as far as to take this demo off the PlayStation Store, meaning that, unless you downloaded it in 2014 and haven’t deleted it since, you cannot play PT. That is, unless you plan on scouring eBay for a console with the demo on its hard drive and price-tag scarier than the game itself.
Thanks for that one, Konami. We’re super stoked that Silent Hill is now a pachinko machine franchise instead.
