10 Video Games Where Evil Won

5. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep

Dead Space 3 Ending
Disney

Kingdom Hearts may be gaming’s most convoluted franchise but Birth By Sleep was undoubtedly one of its strongest entries. Released back in 2010, it’s the sixth instalment in the franchise but served as a prequel, set 10 years before the first game.

Revealing primary antagonist Master Xehanort’s origins, it moved away from the exploits of Sora and Riku, focusing on new protagonists Terra, Aqua and Ventus across three separate campaigns.

It starts with Terra and Aqua taking the Mark of Mastery exam which would grant them rank of Keyblade Master. Xehanort manipulates this exam to encourage darkness within Terra’s heart, then goes missing right as the Unversed begin attacking worlds.

Culminating in a final battle against Xehanort, it comes at great cost and the three heroes fail their mission. Aqua becomes trapped in the realm of darkness, Terra’s body becomes possessed by Xehanort and Ventus falls into a catatonic state, hidden inside Castle Oblivion to keep him safe.

It wouldn’t be until Kingdom Hearts 3 that these protagonists finally reached a happy ending but Birth By Sleep ended on a bleak note, though its secret ending “Blank Points” set out the path to their rescue.
