9. Mortal Kombat (2011)
The original timeline of the Mortal Kombat series ended in a massive battle royal between every combatant, all trying to obtain ultimate power and rule of the realms.
After this showdown between the entire roster, it came down to the final two warriors, Shao Kahn and Raiden, standing atop the pyramid of Argus and duking it out.
Raiden, realizing he is beaten, sends a message back in time to himself in order to prevent this fate from befalling everyone right before Shao Kahn cracks his skull open like a ripe watermelon with his war hammer.
This then leads to the new alternate timeline the series follows to this day where Raiden prevented this bleak future from occurring.
However, the beloved original timeline everyone grew up with and followed was now over, and a point many players miss is that it ended with the villain Shao Kahn killing Raiden and winning Armageddon.
Shao Kahn's ending in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon explained that after gaining ultimate power he went insane after he had nothing left to conquer.
A fitting end to the evil emperor, but a depressing one for the fans of our heroes who had failed to stop him.
