While Modern Warfare 2's underrated narrative ends well on a personal level, in the grand scope of things it ends exactly as the villain wanted.

After some devastating twists that leave many members of Task Force 141 dead, it comes down to Captain Price and Soap chasing down and killing the corrupt, double-crossing Commander Shepherd in a hard-fought fight that leaves them both bloody and beaten.

Everything seems peachy as the duo is extracted out of the scene via helicopter and heroic music starts blaring for a job well done. Captain Price gives us one final one-liner to see us off into the credits, however, there's really little reason to celebrate at all.

Shepherd has triggered a war between Russia and America, and the actual mastermind, Makarov, managed to escape without any repercussions. Sure Shepherd is lying in the dust with a knife in his face which is satisfying, but it doesn't change the fact that he achieved his goal and architected World War 3.

Our heroes are then forced into hiding for months as they end up in enemy territory with the villain's henchmen hunting them down.

While the plot of Modern Warfare 3 continues the story and follows Captain Price finally finishing the fight, this entry in the series ends on a decidedly grim note.
