10 Video Games With Excellent Gameplay (That Still Disappointed)

Anthem was such an infamously problematic game that a lot of people forgot that its gameplay was actually really solid.

I say “was” given that the game was lambasted so thoroughly that even its reboot which was supposed to restore the game to its original vision was ultimately scrapped.

Similar to the case of Fallout 4, this is a game with such pedigree in its developer and publisher that it seemed fated to succeed. You could argue that with such anticipation from players, it could never live up to the hype, but Anthem still stumbled more than you’d expect. That’s not to say it stumbles at the first hurdle. Your first experience choosing your playstyle, flying through the gorgeous game world, playing with your abilities, engaging in the unique combat experience and checking out the gunplay is fantastic. In fact, it’s so fantastic you assume there has to be a really wonderful game under there somewhere.

Unfortunately, that’s pretty much all the game has going for it.

Beyond the core gameplay mechanics, the mission structure was highly repetitive and unengaging, and the story was lackluster at best. On top of that, loot progression wasn’t even satisfying, enemy AI needed serious work, and the entire experience felt unfinished and half-baked.

Anthem is a blast to fight in and a joy to get around, it’s just such a shame there’s not much worth doing within it.
