As much as VR has expanded the sensory potential of video games, it's fair to say that two of the five senses are much tougher to engage - smell and taste.

But it sure isn't for lack of trying, as to support the release of Gran Turismo 2 back in 1999, Sony decided to coat the game discs in a scratch and sniff scent marketed as "racing pit smell."

And so, anyone who gave the second game disc a sniff would catch a whiff of gasoline and burnt rubber, yet the feature was given so little press by Sony that, even at the time, you couldn't be blamed for missing it.

FIFA 2001 followed suit with its own "football pitch" aroma the next year, after which the gimmick died a hard-and-fast death. But impressively, players have recently discovered that the smells still persist some two decades later.

As for taste, we wouldn't recommend you start licking the discs or anything.
