1. Pokémon - Nuzlocke

Though technically not a mode built into the game, the most brutal permadeath in video games lies within many people’s beloved childhood experiences - Pokemon. For those unfamiliar, a “Nuzlocke” run involves playing through the game following a number of strict rules, most notably of which being Pokemon death.

When a Pokemon faints, that’s it, it’s pronounced “dead” and you must release it. Combined with the rules of only being able to catch the first Pokemon encounter of each area, and you have gameplay to make even the steadiest of hands sweat with fear.

Furthermore, each Pokemon caught must be nicknamed, further increasing your attachment to your beloved little doomed monster friends. It just makes watching them fight their heart out only to be taken down by a devastating surprise critical hit just that little bit more painful.
