Yoshi's Island 2 can easily be framed as the rebel of Super Mario games, with a gorgeous hand-drawn art style that's never been repeated, and unique Yoshi-centric gameplay in which taking a hit sets off a frantic timer which counts down how long you have to rescue a baby Mario from his bubble.

It also hosts the most unique and imaginative boss roster in the entire series, doing away with the usual Bowsers and baby-Bowsers to pit you against a range of cute, colourful and pleasingly inflated characters.

Among them, there was a giant Boo in a flower pot who you had to push off a ledge while a couple of Shy Guys pushed the other way, a giant Frog that swallows you whole, forcing you to fight your way out from its insides, and a giant ectoplasmic mass with a heart that you could only reach by shooting eggs through its gelatinous body.

None of the bosses were terribly hard, but the impressive design and art style meant you were always hyped to see what strange creature you'd be fighting next.
